Audio Compression 101: Attack, Release, Ratio & Threshold for Mixing

Understanding the 4 Main Compressor Controls

Threshold: The dB level where compression starts.
Ratio: How heavily volume is clamped (e.g. 4:1).
Attack: How fast compression reacts to transients.
Release: How fast compression lets go of the audio signal.

Vocal Compression vs Drum Punch

For Vocals: Fast attack (5-10ms), medium release (100ms), 3:1 ratio for smooth even volume. For Snare Drums: Slow attack (30ms) to let initial transient crack through before clamping body!
