How to Mic a Drum Kit: 2-Mic, Glyn Johns & 4-Mic Setups

The Famous Glyn Johns 2/3 Mic Method

Developed by Led Zeppelin engineer Glyn Johns: Place 1 overhead mic 3-4 feet directly above snare, 1 side mic near floor tom (equidistant to snare), and 1 kick mic for incredible stereo phase-coherent drum sound!

Close Miking Snare & Kick Drums

Place kick mic (e.g. Shure Beta 52A) inside sound hole 2 inches from batter head. Angle snare mic 1 inch above rim pointing toward drum center.
