Jazz Piano 101: 7th Chords, Extensions & Shell Voicings

Building 7th Chords from Basic Triads

Adding the 7th note of a scale above a standard triad instantly creates sophisticated harmonic color: Cmaj7 (C-E-G-B), Cm7 (C-Eb-G-Bb), C7 (C-E-G-Bb).

Left-Hand Shell Voicings (Root + 3rd + 7th)

Omit the 5th note of the chord in your left hand to leave room for extensions (9th, 11th, 13th) in your right hand melody!
