What Is Rockschool (RSL Awards)?
Founded in London in 1991, Rockschool (RSL Awards) revolutionized music education by launching the world's first graded exam syllabus tailored for contemporary music instruments — electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass, drums, modern piano/keyboards, and vocals.
Today, Rockschool qualifications are globally recognized and regulated by Ofqual (UK Higher Education Body). Holding a Rockschool Grade 6 to 8 certificate earns international UCAS points for students applying to UK, US, European, and Australian universities.
How Rockschool Exams Work (Grade Premiere to Grade 8)
Rockschool grade exams evaluate a student across four key performance modules:
- Performance Pieces (60% Marks): Candidates play 3 prepared pieces from the official Rockschool grade book or approved free-choice cover songs.
- Technical Exercises (15% Marks): Scales, arpeggios, chord progressions, and technical rudiments executed to a click track.
- Sight Reading & Improv (10% Marks): Reading unseen musical notation or improvising a solo over a backing track loop.
- Ear Tests & General Musicianship (15% Marks): Pitch recognition, rhythm recall, and musical knowledge questions posed by the examiner.
