The Secret Power of Ear Training: How to Play Songs by Ear on Guitar & Piano

What Is Ear Training & Relative Pitch?

Many beginners assume that musicians who play songs by ear possess a rare, magical talent called 'perfect pitch'. In reality, over 95% of professional musicians rely on Relative Pitch — the trainable ability to identify musical intervals, chords, and melodic distances relative to a reference note.

Ear training connects what you hear in your mind or on a recording directly to your fingers on the fretboard or keyboard.

Simple Interval Tricks Using Famous Melodies

  • Major 2nd (Do-Re): Opening notes of Happy Birthday.
  • Major 3rd (Do-Mi): First two notes of Oh When The Saints.
  • Perfect 4th (Do-Fa): Opening notes of Here Comes The Bride or Subah Ho Gayi Mamu.
  • Perfect 5th (Do-Sol): Opening notes of Star Wars Theme or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
  • Octave (8ve): Opening notes of Somewhere Over The Rainbow.
